Personality, warmth, expertise, and artistic presence feature heavily across Kameliia’s “Arcanus” release on Setaoc Mass’ SK-X Series.
Norway’s Kamelia Parvanova, aka Kameliia, makes an outing on the SK-X label after previously appearing on Amotik’s label and with a familiar unrelenting style. This time, Kameliia’s tone and above all the feeling in this record is very much a sense of warmth and a suspension in that feeling through the release. That feeling grabs hold of you and will not let go. It whispers, “Hey I got you, come with me.”
This is obviously apparent on the standout track “Taken,” which firmly grasps you and then sends you to another place with this heavily programmed forest of percussion. Further in, you’re invited to sit with her mind as you experience these flying synths in the stereo field. It is an absolutely stunning and lovely sonic world that Kameliia presents to us.
“120 Mile Per Hour” and “I Told You Twice“ both have this sense of disembodied narration shared between them leading one to wonder about any deeper meanings especially when one of the voices on “120 Miles Per Hour” states “Of course I am, I’m traumatized,” while being faced with a string ensemble hit. “Arcanus”, the title track, confirms the stylistic choices of Kamellia leading off the EP with this pleasant uplifting warm suspended atmosphere, contrasted by bounding and rolling kicks.
Once again, SK-X makes a very easy choice to represent their label, since above all, it is about the style and personality of the artist. In every case, this is the major reason why you’re listening to Techno and not top 40 Tech House or bleeding your ears off with whatever razor wire-wrapped sounds are being pushed on you at 160 BPM.
Soul, integrity, style, character, restraint, and artistic message are all over this “Arcanus” EP. It’s just a great affirmation of why we choose to listen to this music. It’s an artistic communication and Kameliia represents that very well on this release. She’s not trying to fit in—Kameliia is an artist with something to say.
