“Papertrip” features an absolutely crackin’ set of tracks that will set the dancefloor on fire. Watch out for Wallace.
After years of running club nights in Edinburgh, Wallace has since channeled his creative energy into a musical endeavor of his own. From an early age, Wallace’s parents’ love of music and nature exposed him to a myriad of soundscapes and travels that are now entwined in his tracks. “Papertrip” is Wallace’s powerful followup for Rhythm Section after his equally epic 2023 EP, “Ripples.”
The opening title track begins with a laidback shuffling groove that slowly builds into an epic heater of a Deep House cut that will 100% be burning up dancefloors this summer. Prepare for some serious stank faces, head bobbin’, and noise ordinance violations when “BB” is bumping. And with just enough tinges of UK Garage and 90s rave revival without going too over the top. A bouncy bass line and broken beat form the backbone of “The Function”, building and releasing tension around call-and-response chord stabs and a vocal using Wallace’s distinctive touch to chopping samples.
Field recordings of birds and rain falling in the forest permeate Wallace’s productions, taking the listener on a journey through cinematic soundscapes under the backdrop of banging club jams. The closing track “Backwaters” is an excellent example of this, with a mesmerizing melodic loop evoking the sense of cool and calm stillness of the sunrise of sunset over a hazy lake.
Wallace also started the label Tartan Records in early 2022 to release his own music, earning him the support of the likes of Dixon, Palms Trax, Ryan Elliot, Hunee, Roman Flügel, Gilles Peterson, and more. Now, with numerous releases on Tartan and underground house heavyweight labels like Mule Music, Studio Barnhus, Disco Halal, and Rhythm Section, on top of completely smashing a closing set at Panorama Bar in a kilt at the beginning of April, don’t be surprised if you’re hearing a lot more than whispers about Wallace around town.
Don’t mess with a man in a kilt—watch out for Wallace.
