VIL – “Birds of Prey” (dolly) [November 1, 2024]

Known for his intricate, layered sound design and ability to blend atmospheric elements with pulsing rhythms, the Portuguese producer/DJ brings a refreshing depth to the genre. This 8-track “Birds of Prey” EP feels like an audio exploration of vast, open spaces, driven by hypnotic beats and lush textures that make it a captivating listen, whether on the dance floor or through a pair of headphones.

The opening track, “Ritmo Duro,” sets a dark, moody tone with its tense build-up and looming bassline. The track’s rhythm is relentless but carries a feeling of subtle tension, as if it’s constantly on the brink of something greater. With crisp hi-hats and occasional, haunting vocal snippets, VIL constructs a landscape that’s as eerie as it is enticing.

“Birds of Prey,” the EP’s title track, dives into a more experimental soundscape. It’s filled with unexpected twists and syncopations that keep the listener engaged, shifting effortlessly from ambient passages to dense, percussive moments. There’s a playfulness in the way Vil weaves these elements together, and it speaks to his skill as a producer who’s unafraid to take risks. The layered pads and pulsating synths build a brooding, cinematic atmosphere, making “Birds of Prey” a journey within itself.

“Handful” has the more tribal influence in it and coupled with a driving bassline, spacious pads and a stripped back minimal vibe quickly entices the ears. “Drea” reflects his signature ability to blend minimalism with energy, inviting listeners into a world that’s both entrancing and disquieting.

Tracks like “Magaz” and “Solitude” reveal VIL’s knack for contrasting grit with atmospheric depth. “Magas” is an industrial powerhouse with booming low-end frequencies and distorted textures, exuding a raw, almost mechanical force. Meanwhile, “Solitude” offers a lighter, more contemplative feel while still staying rooted in VIL’s dark, minimalistic aesthetic. Its syncopated hi-hats and hazy reverb create an ambient layer that’s as engaging as it is elusive, letting his versatility shine through. “Lowblow” dials back the intensity slightly, inviting introspection with ambient echoes and shifting textures that offer a final, reflective note.

With Birds of Prey, VIL has crafted an EP that’s both striking and immersive. The release feels perfectly at home on Steffi’s dolly label, known for championing innovative and genre-bending sounds.

This EP is a testament to VIL’s artistry, blending hypnotic grooves with cerebral soundscapes that push techno into new, compelling territory.

Be on the lookout for more of the Portuguese maestro in the future.
