A Thousand Details returns to Hayes Collective with the “Unrestful Mind” EP. Featuring four tracks on vinyl and an additional digital track, the EP is set for release on November 22nd in both formats.
The Portuguese producer makes his mark on Hayes once again, four years after his “Mirage” EP. Over time, A Thousand Details has demonstrated a tireless commitment to evolution, breaking free from any singular style or vibe. Releases on labels such as Knotweed 51 and Tar Hallow and his EP on EarToGround represent pivotal moments in his artistic career, highlighting his ability to blend technique with his creative vision.
With over a decade of experience, Gustavo’s deep understanding of techno manifests through both his production techniques and sonic intentions. His music originates from an extensive collection of hardware, using tools like the Digitakt, TR-909, and modular systems to shape his unique sound. In recent years, his style has embraced a more glowy and emotive approach, with warm, chord-driven motifs that add depth to his compositions. This openness to harmony and texture contrasts beautifully with the raw, driving energy at the core of techno, creating a balance that defines his own sound.
The opening track, “Unrestful Mind”, immediately captures a sense of restlessness and disquiet. At the same time, it evokes a nostalgic feel of a distant but present Detroit heritage, blending a foggy and familiar atmosphere with a flowing grounded coolness. This balance of tension and insight is carried through its never-ending loop, creating a strong, entrancing sense of motion.
“Saatchi at Sloane” is a straightforward track, once again summoning a clear sense of the late 90s and early-2000s techno sounds. A very “funky” track, it embraces the past in a way that highlights the virtues of a strong legacy.
“Highbury Fields” appears more nervous, spacious, and imagetic. The bassline flows in waves, complemented by a tight, looping melody that pairs with a heavy, crushed kick. Harmonic chords weave through the mix, enveloping the track with a moody yet ascendant feel. It’s a composition with a scenic, almost cinematic quality that builds steadily.
“Cherish the Moment” captures the spirit of early Chicago and Detroit house music, evoking flashes of lights and smiles on the dancefloor. A textured framework shelters its tough structure, giving the track a compact and contained shape. It balances the warmth of its uplifting vibe with the raw edge of its low-end.
“Ruskin Park in Denmark Hill” hints at a tribal influence through its lively rhythm, which drives the track with joyful energy. Surrounded by rich chords, it creates a cohesive movement, delivering a cadence that feels resolute and clear.
This “Unrestful Mind” EP is a dancefloor-oriented collection that draws deeply from the nostalgic roots of techno and house, particularly Detroit’s timeless influence. At the same time, it embodies a modern approach, bridging past and present in a way that feels both fresh and familiar.
