Veiga – “Locum” (Self-release) [December 20, 2024]

On his latest “Locum” EP, the Portuguese artist presents four tracks that delve deep into high textures and tangible forms, crafting a sound that resonates within our psyche. Each track feels like it accumulates and merges elements, building a dense and an immersive experience.

Also known for his duo project alias, Err0, Veiga is one of those newcomers who truly deserves our attention. Recently supported by notable figures in the scene, he’s been steadily gaining the recognition he deserves.

Drawing inspiration from Freudian psychology and Erving Goffman’s sociological concepts (most notably from Forms of Talk), the “Locum”’ EP offers a conceptual framework that goes beyond just sound. While we won’t dive into the theoretical analysis here, it’s clear that the psychological and sociological influences are somehow woven into the very fabric of the music.

Each track on this EP feels like a journey into the mind—abstract and meticulously crafted. The titles themselves offer a sense of direction, but it’s the music that expresses these complex ideas without the imperative need to understand it.

The tracks are far from easy to decode, and therein lies their beauty: a sense of freedom within the abstract, where listeners can form their own unconscious links.

The EP plays with deep techno’s ageless nature—both timeless and contemporary. While each track offers something different, they all share an undoubtedly energy for dancefloor that works just as well on a proper sound system. Tracks like “Locum” feel more playful and colorful, evoking a touch of Marcal, while others explore breakbeats, but they all share the same strong sense of perplexity and ageless lanes of that deep techno sound.

Ultimately, “Locum” is a work that thrives in its abstraction. It’s not about clarity or direct connection. it’s about feeling; the kind of feeling that emerges when you lose yourself in the sound and let the music unfold.
