Vil & Cravo have launched their own record label, Carícia, releasing the iconic sound that they’ve developed as a duo.
Having released several strong works together, most notably on the Klockworks in 2021 and Be As One Imprint in 2022, it felt like only a matter of time before some of their more personal creations would be released. As expected, the debut release does not disappoint. In fact, part of the surprise lies in the unexpected: they have taken on a broader musical direction.
Carícia Records was not created solely for classic techno. The label embraces electro, house and other genre influences, enabling the debut EP to showcase a soulful, multidimensional approach. The first track, “So Right”, recalls some of the vibe from their Klockworks hit “Fuck This Dub”, but with a warmer, more joyful energy. With reverberating jazzy keys floating over a strong groove, the track leans more house than techno in a way. The vocal melodies and garage-inspired percussion give it a retro-modern feel of classic elements with a fresh touch. It’s a great example of their ability to bridge styles while maintaining dancefloor functionality.
Throughout the EP, their love for jazz, soul, funk, disco, and R&B is unmistakable. The release features two joint tracks and two solos creating a balanced and varied offer for listeners.
On the B-Side, Cravo’s “FUTUREDETROIT” is already familiar from their DJ sets. It’s introspective and intuitive, with a darker, serious vibe, but not without a smile behind it. Driven by a jam-like rhythm that feels like a drum machine in workout mode, the track flows naturally. It features dub-influenced delay motifs, a wobbly, mumbling bassline, and an exploratory spirit that steps beyond what Cravo is typically known for. It’s a powerful dancefloor tool, perfect for both warm-ups and peak-time sets, depending on how it’s played.
Finally, Vil’s “Hard to Find” dives into acid jazz territory, touching some shades of Saint Germain’s music, but with a punchier, bouncier bassline. The track summons vintage intentions from an earlier era of electronic music with a modern and a mystical edge. Delayed and diffused vocals circle around dissonant keys, while the steady, muscular kick and bass hold it all together. It’s introspective yet driving, a tightly arranged track that is designed to make you dance.
Overall, this EP is a strong and refreshing debut from Carícia Records. It’s worth listening to, supporting, and keeping an eye on for what’s coming next.
