Bedez – “Glass Key” EP (Trau-ma)

Bedez has been on the up and up for a couple of years now, thanks to some notable releases on Crudo and Say What? But this “Glass Key” EP marks a first appearance for the Portuguese label, Trau-ma. This outing is a bit different from his previous cold and gritty cuts, offering some emotive passages in the tension parts to really give the listener something to latch on to and connect with, while this relentless and driving set of beats is pounding the dance floor.

Most certainly, it can be heard on the synths drenched in reverb at the back of title track “Glass Key” and also “Locked Pattern,” where they are always setting down an unresolved state, but at the same time, the reverb carries the release of the tails on the synths, so there’s a certain longing characteristic that is subdued yet slightly epic. The last track, “Never Again,” takes a different approach and focuses on a meaty low end, and where the tension synths in the previous tracks are wistful and harmonic, the tension synths are sequenced or effected with a possible pitched delay to become dissonant and uncomfortable, making you run to the safety of that massive wall of bass in the low end.

For some people, they will come to this EP for the epic synth lines, but they will probably stay and come back to that truly articulate and characterized bass and proper techno vibes in “Never Again.” The whole EP is quite a statement of quality, and it will stack up to be a centerpiece of any top-of-the-night set. Mostly for its ability to connect and drive home the intensity and moods contained within. Certainly looking for more from Bedez this year.
