IGLO – “Severance” (Figure)

A confident and focused techno statement from one of Figure’s most intriguing voices, Severance sees IGLO refining a lean, functional approach while weaving in subtle, expressive touches. Rather than riding one formula, the EP shifts in texture and mood across its tracks, from clinical grooves to more emotive atmospheres highlighting both precision and personality.

The EP’s opener, Connection, is a masterclass in minimalist momentum. A taut low-end and sparse percussion anchor the track with a heads-down techno groove, but it’s the understated melodic hints that keep it from feeling sterile. There’s a sense of purpose here. This is music built for extended DJ sets where restraint becomes a virtue. Kauriraris tightens the screws. Urgency comes through in nervous synth motifs and sharper rhythmic interplay. The grooves are lean but never dull, unfolding via micro-variations rather than big drops. It’s a high-pressure track that rewards patience as it slowly builds tension.

Blink Twice delves into deeper, darker territory. Its denser textures and slow-burn structure lean toward shadowy atmospheres, preferring mood over dancefloor bangers. The weight of the groove and the repetition of its elements give it a cinematic, almost hypnotic effect, perfect for late night or afterhours. Alive feels comparatively warmer. It doesn’t abandon the EP’s precision but introduces a subtle swing and more open melodic territory. Tonal shifts bring breathing space, making this one of the more emotionally engaging tracks here like a moment of clarity after the earlier tension. Forlornly rounds out the experience with a spacious, reflective mood. Minimal rhythms and airy textures give it a calm, drifting quality that are ideal for winding down or deep listening. It’s less about the dancefloor and more about atmosphere, closing the EP with composure and subtle emotional weight.

Severance is an understated but substantial techno offering. Rather than leaning on dramatic peaks or effects, IGLO’s strength here lies in precision of groove and subtle shifts in feel. Across the EP, the tracks balance functional club utility with enough character and nuance to reward repeated listening. It’s a release that feels very much in conversation with Figure’s contemporary techno ethos; sleek, effective, and forward-thinking without ever sounding generic.
