Taylor emphatically breaks the mold granting loads of killer, with little filler. This release will rock the house as soon as it starts playing.
UK boy wonder Tim Taylor has been quiet on the scene the last two years. That isn’t to say he hasn’t been brewing up some magic, quite the contrary. Deciding to take a hiatus to refine and sculpt his sound has paid dividends, as his latest releases show depth of character and stylish charisma. Tim has found his tracks being rinsed on heavy hitting labels such as Deeperfect and Data Transmission.
“Do You Like…” spreads over multiple genres with a heavy emphasis on sultry basslines and chunky grooves. The production is crisp and clear, starting with a more light-hearted vibe and finishing with a raunchier, more sinister attitude. It begins with a bubbly tech-house flow and quickly establishes a sly bass knock, adding intelligent background to what could have previously been mistaken for another run of the mill commercial jaunt. Vocal acapella, while cheeky, is installed professionally and accompanies the songs’ identity nicely. A handful of clever soundbites maintain the silly atmosphere and are struck at crucial times.
As the groan dies down the EP asserts itself in a powerful manner with “Check it”. Without being overly wordy this track is just cool. Swinging kick and snare merge into sonic waves akin to a squeegee sliding down a freshly soaked window as it squeaks and belches an acidy bath. Meaty bass stabs come with force incorporating a double time percussive rhythm that really takes the track to higher levels at a fast velocity. It’s just one of those tracks that rocks the house as soon as it starts playing. Reminiscent of a German Brigante styling with in-your-face action coupled with tantalizing breakdowns leaving the listener on the edge, waiting for the pulse to come back. Cymbals eventually tie the deeper sounds together in wonderful harmony, successfully completing the groove.
Slowing things down a bit while keeping the funk rolling onwards comes “Scratch,” a devious, sultry entry dropping things even lower on the spectrum. Far-out resonance and spacey breaks make up a killer dance track designed to get the people going. Efficient use of broken percussion connects ultra-low buzz in unique harmony. Deep-tech fashion is showcased with the bleeps and blips expected from an experience like the one at hand. Whirling whistles spiral in every direction before punchy bass slaps encapsulate the vibrations, releasing the pent-up energy with a sampled cough.
Static kick and hi-hat undertake the reigns of “Vibrate” in another slick, techy groover. Reverberated tension briefly sets up a melodic onslaught as a booming bass crashes on the scene with concentrated force. Similar to “Check it” in the not-so-subtle usage of abrupt breakdowns, it instills that craving for the melody to return. Evolving beyond the arguably stagnant tech-house rundown isn’t a small feat. Taylor emphatically breaks the mold granting loads of killer, with little filler. A true artist to look out for in the future as we reach the half way point of 2021.
