Dark, gnarly energy animate heavy dance grooves sure to get the party moving. Coming out of Lisbon, Goncalo Salgado aka Lake Haze is tearing lately with releases on Shall not Fade and his offshoot label Atlantic Thunder which launched last year and presents four releases from Lake Haze thus far.
Bombarding breaks and acid start the program off in “Osmosis.” A poignant tune that takes equal parts mechanical synth and rigid percussion, melding together to produce a sinister groove. Kick drums lay the groundwork for a complex yet relatable pattern that bumps along nicely throughout. The same kick is recycled in the second track “sawshark” androunded out to give a more open sound. Aptly named, sawtooth buzzing takes the listener on a nice ride and adds unique dynamic to the meat of the track. The energy rambles up and down with clever sound effects delivered in the form of screeching sirens. Certainly, a track designed to be mixed into or out of with its rhythmic overlay and catchy triplet stems.
Droning acid lines start “Atlantic Modulation” off on an eerie path with wild frequency manipulation. It doesn’t take long for the track to take hold transporting the listener to a dimension that might not have previously been occupied. Never stopping the barrage of minor key squelching from the main line makes for an almost anxiety inducing melody that hits you whether you are ready for it or not.
The heavy hitter on the release is no doubt “Adamastor.” Deep, grumbling, bass beats reverberate down to the bones with pure pleasure. It’s a great example of an electro breaks production that hits on many levels including funk, drive, and the grimy underbelly of electronica we seek out. Warped harp-like chords receive a dampeningpiano pedal-like effect that works brilliantly with the fast-paced percussion and sustained bass line. It’s one of those tracks that seemingly ends before you know it because you got lost in the mix.
Powerful and enigmatic stuff from Lake Haze and his release “Osmosis.” A trendsetting artist that pushes the electro evolution forward. Don’t expect the output to slow anytime soon.
