Over the past few years, this California-based artist has showcased an impressive stylistic versatility through a variety of productions that defy genre conventions while consistently retaining the musician’s singular imprint. Their latest “333” EP released on the Los Angeles-based electronic and techno record label ventures deep into the realm of electro with three fiercely-paced, club-fit cuts where drums and synths take center stage.
“The Art of Abduction” provides a rowdy opening to the EP and highlights the producer’s ability to create momentum through an expert manipulation of rhythm. As the track oscillates between moments of tension and release, the remarkable complexity of its composition irresistibly pulls us into its inexorable and exhilarating pace.
With the slower runner-up, “333”, Wolfe crafts moments of high intensity without resorting to the artifice of increased speed. Their meticulous attention to structure allows for subtle yet effective build-ups which generate ecstatic flashes of energy and are rendered sublime by the lavish balance between gritty kicks and sinuous leads.
“Mind Games” serves as an acid-splashed and galvanic conclusion to this cohesive EP, and evokes the punk spirit of electroclash and EBM in its keen vehemence.
As Wolfe experiments with innovative ways to make us dance, we get the sense that we’re catching but a mere glimpse of the greater scope of their artistic ambitions.
