Eloi – “Rhodes, Ghospel & Acid” (Theresiopolis) [June 21, 2024]

Rich and harmoniously honeyed sounds permeate through the air. The sun is shining, and in a moment where a sense of relief is felt, you realize this is the good life. The smooth grooves feel like a warm breeze glittered with kaleidoscopic waves of funk. And just like that, it’s easy to fall for Parisian fresh face Eloi’s tracks. Having cracked the code on effortlessly giving us all the feels, the vibe they deliver is immaculate. Their tracks roll off the deck like they were made of liquid gold, flowing off the cuff with no resistance. Well-nuanced, their style and groove show no sign of inexperience. A master sampler, their catalog contains samples from legends like Moodyman and Madlib, showcasing their depth of musical knowledge. While anyone can use a sample, the masterfully textured and nuanced layering carries out a sound so full that it comforts your ears like tucking into a blanket.

Having been producing music for over a decade, they have traversed many genre styles before ultimately landing on this impeccably delicious, sweet spot to design tunes from. With a talent for polyrhythms and Leftfield funk, Eloi is championing a depth that has been missing from the House scene for quite some time. Crafting new sounds from older influences of Detroit House, their tracks are well seasoned and packed with the genetic flavor of House music. Their latest release “Rhodes, Ghospel & Acid” serves a dish that pleasures the mind and smooths any wrinkles of worry.

Opening with a kick of funk straight off the top, ’Slash Jazz’ gives a slap of bass and a wicked vocal sample with an attitude. The vocal sample, deliberating over the elements and origins of jazz, blends perfectly with the golden-hued, warm elements of the tune. Textured in a way that leaves you wanting more, it propels you forward. Hotmood, known for their slo-mo boogie and cosmic-funk tunes, collaborate with Eloi for the ‘Slash Jazz Hotmood Remix’ providing a deeper, lengthier cut of the tune.

Grooving even deeper, the title track ‘Rhodes, Ghospel & Acid’ brings even more texture than the previous, layering sounds of gospel, organ melodies, vocal samples and highlighting Eloi’s mastery of polyrhythms. The rich umami flavor sparks a fire in your soul, and sparkling glimmer effects remind you how sweet life can be. Yet, the sweetest surrender can be found in ‘Steve & Caro’. With elements reminiscent of Session Victim’s remix of Kink’s ‘Leko’, a sun-kissed, repeating wave of sound that develops deeper over time glazes over a kick punch. Slowly intertwined twinkles float through, while notes of brass are carefully placed throughout. An essential for the summer dance floor, this album IS the mood.
