not even noticed – “Nocturnal Slide” (Gimme A Break Records) [January 3, 2025]

With its rich textures and emotive undertones, this project finds a way to balance technical prowess with an emotional pull—offering listeners both introspection and energy.

The “Nocturnal Slide” EP opens with “Kura,” a haunting and immersive prelude that sets the tone for what’s to come. Ethereal pads drift over a faint breakbeat, giving the impression of a cityscape cloaked in darkness. The subtle use of field recordings adds an organic touch, grounding the piece in reality while hinting at the surreal.

The second track serves as the EP’s centerpiece. A skittering breakbeat underpins a lush arrangement of filtered synth chords and vocal chops, evoking the feel of a dimly lit underground club. The track’s pacing is meticulous, allowing space for intricate percussive layers and bass swells to shine without overwhelming the composition. It’s a perfect blend of groove and mood.

“Jitter” takes a slightly more experimental approach, blending 2-step rhythms with shimmering arpeggios and detuned melodies. The result is a dreamlike track that feels both alien and familiar. This is where the sonic designs of Not Even Noticed truly shine. The textures feel almost tactile, inviting you to lose yourself in the details.

“Rustle” slows the tempo down but ramps up the emotional intensity. A mournful piano riff glides over minimal percussion and a pulsating sub-bass, creating a sense of longing and stillness. The interplay between organic and electronic elements here is particularly compelling, showcasing the producer’s versatility.

The fifth original track, “Queso,” wraps up the EP on a euphoric yet understated note. It features a four-on-the-floor beat layered with bright synth stabs and airy vocal snippets, creating an optimistic sense of closure. The energy feels reminiscent of early-morning raves, where the first rays of sunlight signal both the end and the beginning.

Phasmid delivers a frenetic but well-composed 150bpm remix to finish off the EP. Elements of 90s trance are blended with a massive bassline, proving that this whole EP is worthy of the late night dance floor.

“Nocturnal Slide” is a testament to the growth of Not Even Noticed as an artist. While rooted in the aesthetics of breakbeat and UK garage, the EP pushes boundaries with a unique sonic identity that leans heavily on atmosphere and narrative. It’s a cohesive body of work that’s equally suited for late-night introspection as it is for club play.

Gimme a Break Records continues to solidify its reputation as a tastemaker label, and this release is no exception. “Nocturnal Slide” is a standout project that deserves attention from anyone passionate about the evolution of electronic music.
