Yazmin – “Whispers” (Silencio)

Yazmin certainly has had a banner year in 2025 and has seemingly enough momentum to punch through the next decade. You can tell with her technique and positive work ethic that this is part of a greater plan to dominate in the years to come.

So what’s different here on “Whispers”? Well, for one, there’s some love given to the vocoder on the title track and similarly in an abstract way with “Tock,” which is sort of rare to hear in techno. Additionally, her techno doesn’t have this “ asleep at the wheel” kind of sound to it. She’s very much in the driver’s seat in this release. That is largely due in part to her ability to capture her own personal energy when laying down tracks. There’s a lot of human expression layered to create infectious grooves, whereas other artists are content with simply staring at automation lanes, poking at them with a mouse, sucking the fun out of everything that’s lively and proper with techno.

There’s a good amount of sensitive and delicate emotions put into the tracks either with it being the dark, soulful groove of “Vanta,” which is certainly a late-night anthem, or the beautiful, tense feelings of “Craft Your Light.” The progression on “Craft Your Light” is not overt but still present and hypnotic and serves mostly and supporting an emotional tension to the driving drum track underneath, setting up a lot of contrast and movement. You might find this track popping up a lot this year as a layer with heavier beats slamming that drum track home. Which, to be honest, would be quite perfect to hear on a large sound system.

The “Whispers” EP feels like just an earmark on a page in an ever-growing story for Yazmin. It feels like she has so much to say, and we’re thankful to be a witness to it.
