Caterina Barbieri – “Noctuary” – (Early Synthesis Works) [released 10/01/20]

Caterina Barbieri has already earned a well deserved seat in the Olympus of electronic music – “Fantas”, from her former EP, is already a young classic. Her music has been labelled minimal perhaps due to the simple sequences used but the well-elaborated overall sound could well be defined as baroque. Either way, the elegance of her compositions is undeniable. Very few are able to complete such sophisticated melodies with that small combination of notes; it takes unique talent to accomplish such a task.

Futuristic organ notes march in funeral procession in “After Finitude.” Then, the solemn tone turns convivial as the score flirts around, takes different textures and forms a cloud of ethereal sound. In “Volteggiando,” few deep staccato orchestration dances in circles to gradually juxtapose into a complex melodic harmony. “Noctuary” is seductively intriguing. High frequency synth lines jovialy interlace and meaow in the ear with pressing effect. “Misery,” charged with classical allure, conforms a tragically distressing mood, an oppressing force that overwhelms the spirit. Tempo slows down and organ synths rise with a sense of suffocation. With this 2020 release, Caterina Barbieri positions herself as a maven not to be forgotten easily. Her unique pictorial landscapes keep minds and ears open.
