The Southern – “Raw Mistake EP” (Truncate) [Released 1/19/21]

Truncate imports The Southern’s “Raw Mistake” EP from Italy for his first label release of 2021. A high energy trio of dancefloor tracks that vary from funky/jackin to tribal/minimal to dark/dubby, all while keeping the intent clearly techno-focused.

“Raw Mistake” opens the EP possibly fooling you into thinking a house record is coming your way. Jackin percussion and an open 909 hi-hat warm up the dance floor in the intro, but instead of standard house snares on the 2 and 4 coming next, The Southern sports a plethora of aggressive techno drum patterns along with lively white noise builds throughout the track. The title vocals build and dissipate faultlessly throughout making it a flawless dance floor track.

The high energy grooves continue with “Wave Trax”, this time with tribal percussion driving the track into more minimal trancy territory. The Italian producer achieves great energy transfers between the musical sections with immaculate white noise build-ups again, along with tight mixing techniques that provide powerful drops. The eerie synth stabs tie the track together with a constant pulse that gives order to the madness induced by the robust, dynamic beats.

The last track “Edge” comes in booming with a darker feel and a huge kick making it a great choice for bigger rooms. The Southern doubles down with longer buildups and a climactic ending that reaches the highest of energy levels before soothing you back out into just the booming kick. Once again, a dubby, static synth chord keeps the listener grounded while the drums give life to the bodies surely jacking to The Southern’s beat.

The Southern gives us a poignant, flavorful EP for 3 different moods, all which are armed and ready to destroy the dance floor (whenever those come back!).
