Ralph Heidel – “Relief” (Kryptox) [January 29, 2021]

Shade of grief and seductive tragedy. It is jazz. It is electronica. And beauty that binds them together. Ralph Heidel is orchestrating a dark limbo.

The sting of melancholy bleeds through sounds that come to play at night. Kryptox is watching closely. They hold a key to the sacred touch of contemporary classical and neo-jazz that opens gates to digital experimentation. The depth of heavy instrumentals colluding with the oblivious stoicism of rhythm dynamics provokes emotion that is heavy yet inescapable. It is a clear urge to give in and shake hands with the enemy.

Heidel has been direct in his ambition to find resolve in grey of uncertainty tempting his sanity. The hot rain pours down your face, and each drop counts in ‘Andalu’ where wounds of heavy sax and drums are cured with subtle touch of synth keys gliding through waves of unbending cymbals clouding vision. The vocals are buried underground in scream of despair. The distant cry of seagulls is callous and unforgiving. Your heart is bruised. The heavy layering and complexity of sound design are reached through shifting contrast of gloom and triumph. ‘They Still Play’ is an anthem of light. Serenity is filling void through softer tunes of saxophone and scorching weight of bass drum.

The end is bittersweet as is characteristic of each track on this EP. The fading solo of weeping sax is outcast in the midst of scornful hopelessness. The final calling of sad violin leaves you naked. It is a sign of fated abandonment. This turbulence is haunting. A touch of psychedelia holds quiet presence and fuels the record with glimmer of pain. It is beautiful, and it is here to stay.
