Annika Wolfe – Bust (Truncate) [February 17, 2021]

Annika Wolfe is a rising talent from the underground scene in Los Angeles. Her debut EP released on fellow Angelino, Truncate’s imprint is a strong statement and shows promise of big things on the horizon.

“Bust” is a five track piece that reminds us what’s to come once things open back up. Though it has a throwback overall feel, the EP gives a refreshing attempt take on raw, jackin techno and electro. Two versions of the first two tracks- with and without lyrics – and a fifth that wraps up intentions shine with their ability to get everyone into the groove. Jovial sequences and catchy lyrics build a straight connection with the dancefloor.

Cavorting assured, “Bust” and “Vibrate” induce a lively beat that quickly takes the mind to beloved Mid-west electro meccas, Chicago and Detroit. Kicks and claps prance around melodiously. The ubiquitous vintage feel serves as the perfect outfit for the wherehouse ball. “Grip” is perhaps the moral of the narrative. With a slightly more experimental touch, this track transfers an up to date sensation. High-pitched original beats initiate the routine amid vintage drums. Looping and clapping come around tickle the ears. An aerial longline momentum holds to then restate a confidence that thrives on. Roots, intuition, and intelligence are ingredients that Wolfe uses to make her work be a landmark in the long standing progression of sound with an under the radar stamp. Old has never looked so new on this outstanding achievement which undoubtedly prompts that we should meet again soon on the dancefloor.
