One of the allures of techno is its anonymity. Dancers fade away from reality and into a mist of hypnotic, familiar sounds supplied by techno DJs. Rose Bonica’s “Send Forgiveness / Disengage)” is club music of a different flavor – it stands out.
Bonica injects (her own) personality and vocal musings into “Send Forgiveness,” the A side tune. The result is a track that’s both warm, due to spoken words encouraging self-love and self-forgiveness, and sharp, thanks to pounding kicks accented by clanging metal percussion. The B side tune, “Disengage,” sounds like an airplane flying over a rave on Mars. A bubbling industrial sound leads the way, while the track’s breakdowns draw the listener closer and build tension using surprising detail. Much like “Send Forgiveness / Disengage,” Bonica, too, stands out. Far from techno metropolises like Berlin, New York and Los Angeles, Bonica hails from Hout Bay, a small coastal town in South Africa.
Here’s to the Rose less traveled.
