Unconformist – “Harness of Power” (Bipolar Disorder) [March 17th, 2021]

Swiss talent Unconformist unleashes uncompromising industrial techno tracks in the premiere of his new EP, “Harness of Power,” where he sets out to explore different rhythmic possibilities.

Over the past few years, a dark techno sound has emerged from the tranquility of the Swiss Alps through Unconformist’s stark productions. With his releases on Underground Connexions Records and STRISCTRX, along with notable features on platforms like HATE, the young artist has demonstrated a taste for speed and rigor in his uncompromising dancefloor weapons. With his new EP out soon on the Bipolar Disorder label, he stays true to the genre of industrial techno while expanding the scope of his soundscape by exploring different rhythmic possibilities.

In “Harness of Power,” Unconformist pulls no punches and delivers an introductory track fit for peak-time sets. It is soaked with the feverish energy of rave, through its blaring intensity and rapturous vocals, revealing a more playful side to its producer’s aesthetic. A robust remix by The Chronics serves as a compelling addendum, and subdues the industrial quality of the original track to emphasize its powerful linearity. The runner-up “All Four Years” sets a darker tone through its ominous loop, which conveys a sense of blissful menace, exacerbated by the urgency of the kick’s unstoppable progression. “Say Nothing,” on the other hand, surprises with its contrasting approach to dance music.

Although we recognize the delightfully grimy sounds that imbue the other tracks in the EP, the broken down rhythm marks a clear break from the standards of club-oriented techno. The result is an exciting hybrid between industrial and jungle, that makes us wonder where the producer will be taking us next. As a rip-roaring conclusion to the release, two remixes of “Say Nothing” by Chlär and Imperial Black Unit stir the track towards uplifting electro and melody-driven EBM.
