Another round of electro power jams comes courtesy of the production wizard, James Shinra.
March third is a date relished in the electronic music industry for its relation to Roland’s TB-303 Bass line synthesizer. The machine that birthed Acid. “Miscellaneous Acid Tracks” releases 30 years after the 303 was introduced, utilizing all of its glorious components.
Shinra delicately crafts high tempo beats with a rugged edge and somehow always makes it ultra-groovy. Raw kick and high hats accompany a soupy bassline to begin the acid inception. As the methodical booms draw on, a tight snare enters the mix. Soon after the beloved acid chirp blends in harmoniously with modular overlay. High energy builds until the reverb dissipates, leaving the percussion to trail off into the distance. While the formula may not be new, it is executed in the highest standard.
Sticking to the acid groove, the second track “isolate” brings acid splashes and bellowing robot echoes. The rhythm is constant and driving but with a more laid-back vibe. A group of high toms creates a fresh drum pattern which is easily woven symbiotically, into the melody. The track scales octaves high, low, and everywhere in between with the underlying acid tinge always present. The crispness of the snare rolls, rimshots, and cymbals come together to equal a sophisticated dance track whether it be on the dancefloor, or on the living room Hi-fi system.
Although industrial in nature, the corners are rounded just enough to produce impressive funkiness. Parallels to old-school Underground Resistance releases are drawn when listening sub consciously. All three tracks begin with 80’s breakbeat drum measures but are evolved skillfully in the final number, “Endgame”. The tone of the acid really makes itself felt deep inside. Radiating effortlessly back and forth as it maintains an unexplainable pureness. James shows off his versatility and craftsmanship with this release. It’s tough to overstate the production quality of the tracks, and easy to undervalue the depth in sound. Above all, it is just an exciting and gripping 18 minute audio treat. One of the best releases this year so far.
