In his new EP, Inhalt Der Nacht showcases his ability to create immersive sonic universes as he orchestrates an exhilarating journey through an exquisitely hellish landscape.
Bis Das Blut Gefriert,” Inhalt Der Nacht’s first solo release in two years, is the materialization of his focus on an “artistic vision” resulting from time spent in isolation during the global pandemic. Out on the prominent German-based Lebendig label, the EP provides a framework where the producer is able to demonstrate his talents as a creator of immersive musical worlds in three exceptional tracks. The beautiful artwork by Helena Heuser adorning the record visually announces Inhalt Der Nacht’s dark musical universe: the engraving style reflects its brooding atmosphere, and the menacing demons are reminiscent of its shrieking echoes.
The introductory seconds of the opening track, in it’s layered complexity, already hints at the intricacy of Inhalt Der Nacht’s sound. Underneath ethereally distorted chants and distant screams, a frantic beat creeps up from underneath the surface before releasing its full force by the thirtieth second. What ensues is an immersive trip through the innerworks of the EP’s deliciously hellish landscape, full of eerie synths and raging kicks. Perhaps what makes this track so engaging is its narrative power, as it irresistibly pulls us into a story with its obsessively dynamic structure, constantly inviting us to delve deeper.
“Das Feuer Des Lebens” starts off with a dirtier and rougher beat, closer to the conventions of industrial techno. Disruptive noises erupt through the sonic space, evoking the mental image of an infernal machine inexorably running its course. The post-punk and industrial aspects of Inhalt Der Nacht’s productions come to the forefront, but are well integrated into the logic of the EP.
By contrast, “Gier Frisst Seele” wields a much deeper and richer kick, while still embracing the blissfully diabolical sounds that permeate the rest of the tracks. The EP ends with a remix of “Gier Frisst Seele” by rising talent Peryl, whom Inhalt Der Nacht has admired for quite some time now. His reimagining of the original track, both slowed and broken down, serves as a perfect conclusion to an otherwise vigorously fast and intense release. Through its radically different rhythm, we are offered a new perception of Inhalt Der Nacht’s rich musical world. In its melancholy, it emphasizes the delicate balance between ethereal beauty and gritty darkness that is identifiable across this release, which opens up a promising horizon of possibilities for Lebendig and its roster of artists.
