Nene’s hell raising talents are on display for all – living and dead alike – in her recent release “BEAST EP,” out on POSSESSION, a Queer party and label based in Paris.
If all of the dead people in the world were to get together and plan a massive rave, they’d probably book Nene H as the headliner. Nene’s sound is equal parts spine tingling and booty rocking – just the elixir to get even the deadest of bones shaking again. Nene’s hell raising talents are on display for all – living and dead alike – in her recent release “BEAST EP,” out on POSSESSION, a Queer party and label based in Paris.
“Hush Now,” the A1 tune, wastes no time getting the party started. The first sounds that greet us are a belting, distorted kick and an impossible-to-not-like baseline that keeps us grooving throughout the tune. Layers of haunting, atmospheric sounds give “Hush Now” a chilling edge, proving techno can be dark and groovy at the same time.
The Polish queen of hard techno, VTSS, joins the party with a remix of “Hush Now” as the A2 tune. VTSS’s take on “Hush Now” has a similar overall mood as the original – groovy and powerfully haunting – but relies more on percussive movement and touches of dynamism. This dynamism gives the VTSS remix more room for tension and release, whereas Nene’s original is more of an even keeled wallop.
The final tune, “Beast – Hadone Remix,” is the cherry on top of this stellar EP. Warm, yet melancholic chords inject catharsis and musicality into an EP has been mostly rhythm and texture up to this point. Around the 3-minute mark, colorful synth stabs join the ensemble and build to a cinematic climax. This is the stuff of closing-track-grandeur. DJs, take note.
