X-Coast – “SC-CD001” (Steel City Dance Discs) [April 23, 2021]

The Serbian tastemaker delivers a four-pack of in-your-face house tunes tinged with the French touch.

Subtlety be damned, SC-CD001 is a smack in the face — a groovy one at that.

The EP is X-Coast’s second release on Steel City Dance Discs, the Aussie born label spanning feel good house, techno, and gritty jungle from likes of Mall Grab and Yazzus.

“Track 1” kicks things off with an other-worldly bash of house goodness. The tune opens with a bouncy, back-and-forth bassline that beckons us to come along. Before we can catch our breath, a booming vocal proclaims “Let there be house! I am the creator!” Then the kick drum becomes crunchy and distorted – this isn’t the smooth and soulful house music we’re used to. Spacey synths and organic percussion punch at one another, creating a sound that is both futuristic and natural.

Another highlight, “Track 4,” punches you in the gut and the funny bone, at the same time. The array of sound elements changes often, keeping us on our toes. One minute, shiny French house synths slice back and forth above a grooving bassline. The next, a plucked bass riff and a wavey chord progression take over. It’s a page out of Daft Punk’s book – but on overdrive.

SC-CD001 is a study of in-your-face house hedonism. Methodical progression gives way to brash spontaneity. The release is a jolt of pent-up energy we’ve collectively built up during the pandemic.

Here’s to letting go.
