Coming fresh off a vinyl release of her 2020 “Lode EP” on the U.K. label last month, Italian DJ/Producer Rebecca Delle Piane is back on Ben Sims’ Symbolism imprint with a new four-track EP of dark, mind-bending techno ready to scorch dance floors.
The title track starts it off with what is quickly becoming her signature sound, brutally intense drum beats paired with disorienting spacey synth sequences. Syncopated modular bleeps keep the trance-inducing cosmic vibe alive while the drums take enchanting twists and turns to keep a constant energy flow to the floor.
“Curtains” seeps into your soul next, bringing a more haunting, anxiety-driven vibe that will stick around throughout the rest of the record. Detuned hypnotic synth chords and melodies run rampant as the terrorizing background noise and driving beat takes you to a nightmarish state of mind whilst sweating you out with constant movement.
Starting off the b-side, “Red Shuttle” provides an expert workshop on techno drum programming and mixing. As the relentless 909 kick pounds away throughout the short <4 minute track sans a few brief breaks, Piane focuses on interesting and unique changes to the swinging drums, ranging from subtle to in-your-face to keep you engaged.
“Wrapping Burbs” wraps up the psychoactive record with full power to the psychedelic tanks. Soaked in reverb, a disconcerting synth sequence takes you to another dimension as the drums give you an unstoppable groove, asking you to let go of your mind and let the music take control one last time to finish off a fantastic EP of brooding warehouse techno.
