Anika Kunst – “Hidden Intention” EP (Symbolism) [Jan 28, 2022]

Spanish techno DJ/producer Anika Kunst had a great year of releases in 2021, from EPs released on Rekids and Chapter to having her tracks featured on popular compilations by Uncage and Symbolism. Starting 2022 off right, she’s back on Ben Sims’ Symbolism label with her own “Hidden Intention” EP release of four heavy hitters tuned for the dance floor.

“Detox” starts off the “Hidden Intentions” EP with an ebb and flow of high energy centered around a driving groove and gated synth stabs that stay relentless throughout. As the talented producer shakes up the drum beat with assorted percs and hat lines, the evolving synth stabs provide all that’s needed in the melodic zone to result in an extremely satisfying minimal techno gem.

“Addictions” is up next with a darker feel, heading towards the cosmos for sonic inspiration. A pulsating bass line grooves about while spacey delayed bells swirl around in tight syncopation with the beat. Again showing off her mastery of energy flow, Kunst subtly but effectively brings about inspiring arrangement changeups with both class and character.

“Hidden Intention” exerts yet another tasteful underground vibe to the record, bringing about a grimey warehouse feel. A cleanly overdriven kick ferociously knocks with the main synth sequence as swinging hats and shaker lines dance around, keeping the beat fresh at all times. The result for this title track off the EP is a rock-solid dance floor destroyer.

“No Stress” completes the impressive “Hidden Intention” EP record release with one more showcase of the diverseness that Kunst is capable of. A cavernous synth reverb matched with a clean, zappy kick click assumes the task of giving off a huge sense of space while praising the power of the almighty kick drum. Driving and mechanical, the track transports you to an alternate reality of entrancing circumstances and mysterious surroundings in an excellent closing statement.

“Hidden Intention” is available on most streaming and digital platforms.
