Case – “CA001” (Case) [April 24, 2023]

Case, a mysterious new Techno project coming from Edinburgh, makes an exceptional debut with “CA001”.

Very little can be inferred as to who Case is, but this newly emerging alias from Edinburgh is already delivering the goods. When searching for a new release to review, the main attribute is listening for music that catches my attention right away, and this 4-track EP definitely did the trick. The more I listened, the more impressed I became. The tracks sound like they could have been made by producers held in the highest regard, and the fact that you’re unable to know anything else about the artist, or artists, involved, makes discovering it that much more exciting.

Could this be a producer we’re already familiar with exploring a new alias? Someone who’s just starting to put out his or her work? In any case, Case is worthy of our attention and praise.

Starting off the “CA001” EP is the hypnotic Techno anthem, “Modus.” A single bleep sound on loop ascends, while a wicked fast beat sets an unrelenting pace. Minute percussive textures keep the mix loose and unpredictable, constantly evolving to keep you fully locked in. Track two, titled “Core Data,” helps confirm that Case knows what they’re doing. Multiple layers of tribal drums inject life into an otherwise robotic soundscape. In this track, it becomes apparent that Case knows how to fill out a wide stereo field without letting any of the elements clash; a production technique that takes a long time to master.

Only when the dancefloor has reached its peak should you play the third cut, titled, “Tight Focus.” Hypnotic, yet perfectly suitable for the peak time, this track isn’t for the faint of heart. Competing modular riffs intermingle and boil over. Play this tune any faster, and it might start to sound like something other than Techno all together. Lastly, Case cools things down a bit with the final track “Fission,” but only slightly. Playfully sporadic claps and swooshing sound effects add excitement to a stripped-back groove. Like a plane arriving at a landing strip, “Fission” returns to the pace Case started the EP with, coming full circle and leaving you wanting more.
