Ecilo & Donjoe – “Golden Hours” (ARTS) [June 23, 2023]

Indonesian-based Ecilo joins Rotterdam-based label ARTS with five soulful and groovy Techno cuts across “Golden Hours” that are sure to perk up any avid listener’s ear.

The Canadian-born but now Jakarta-based artist has been creating his soul-laden sounds since 2008, and this new “Golden Hour” five-tracker is no exception as it blurs the lines between House and Techno with a high-speed tempo that’s perfect for any situation.

“Skyline” starts off the EP and only takes a few seconds of tripped-out synth work before the drums and bassline start to kick, and the listener gets sent on a ride. The driving-ness of the track but with minimal synths throughout the tune makes for a great opener and establishes from the very start the groovy nature of this EP. “Never Ends” follows up and is more of a dark 3-am-in-the-morning belter. The driving bassline remains throughout, the synths remain haunting, and the vibe just screams, ‘play me in a warehouse at 4am’.

“Manifesto Funk” is the 3rd track on the album and is reminiscent of those Detroit flavors we all know and love. Blending an up-tempo beat with a bit of piano-laden grooves, this track would do well during a set during the day or even a warmup set in the evening. A relenting bassline is sure to keep ears locked, while the piano will surely bring a smile to any face in the crowd. “Golden Hours” is the title track and the only track actually written with Donjoe on the EP to bring about a funky, almost afro-tech-like beat with a fiery bongo-laden intro that soon gives way to a spatial and somewhat psychedelic synth. This one is absolutely a sunset groover that takes the ear on a kaleidoscopic journey through sound.

“Water Breather” is the final cut on the EP and is a fitting end to it as it brings all of the elements together seamlessly. Dimensional synth work and an uncompromising bassline as well as minimal drums makes for a track that can be played at almost any time of day. Whether for a minimal groovy set during the day or a pulsating midnight warehouse vibe, either way, the crowd is sure to be delighted.
