Swedish ritual dark ambient master Trepaneringsritualsen sees his cassette album Kainskult ” (which came out in 2017 on US label Cloister Recordings) offered a series of remixes from industrial techno illustrious acts, gathering Codex Empire, Pact Infernal, Ancient Methods and the mysterious Headless Horseman on one of Berlin’s finest imprint: Aufnahme + Wiedergabe.
This limited edition vinyl release will see the light (or birth in the deepest parts of the underworld) on the 19th of February, a very efficient way to kick off 2021 with this incredible lineup of artists.
Let’s focus on Ancient Methods’ interpretation of the track “Serpent Seed.”
Once again Michael Wollenhaupt, aka Ancient Methods pushes forward the boundaries of techno, exploring new sounds combining a western instrument, the guimbard (cowboy’s lamellophone), mesmerizing atmospheres, harsh industrial and noise sounds.
The remix starts with an ethereal pad skillfully blended with a take from the Ozark harp and Trepaneringsritualsen ’s famous growling vocals to set the direction of the track, you know you will not get out of this listening intact. After those seventeen bars of intro, a heavy hitting, yet refined kick drum arises from the soil with a reverberated impact and an almost military-like cymbals and percussions topped with a discreet astatic noise pattern driving you directly to the track’s core: a gritty synth, ondulant as a snake, lurking in the darkness before its attack, paired with Trepaneringsritualsen’s roaring death metal vocals and incredible broken drums resulting in an amazing dance floor friendly, uncompromised heavy hitter.
Later on, Ancient Methods lays his signature synth pads, reminiscing horns from a forgotten medieval nordic era. The Swedish lord of the occult vocals’ are definitely a winning combination with Wollenhaupt’s touch, transforming them into a powerful dance floor weapon.
To end this review with many limbs lost, the remix is excellent and makes Trepaneringsritualsen’s extremely esoteric and underground music accessible to the less initiated and ready to open the gates of hell one more time for our greatest pleasure.
