Daniel Avery takes a masterful approach to shedding light on the painful contrast of the ideal fantasy and the doomed reality that we consciously push away to find what is missing. The ricocheting of disturbing sound effects reflective of a dreamlike paranoia replaces the beautiful drops of harp echoing in distance. ‘Dusting for Smoke’ is a tricky foreshadowing of all that we experience in this musical utopia of serenity and pain. After all, what is light in the absence of darkness? In ‘Infinite Future,’ we observe the unwavering fight in their eternal
collusion. Moments of slight discomfort felt through a shockwave of impulsive rage in ‘Searing Light,
Forward Motion’ and signs of psychological disorientation observed in ‘Depth Wish’ drive the
momentum behind the dynamic buildup of electricity. Yet again, there is an expected return to
seductive harmony in the final set of tracks of a two-part record. After a more tumultuous exploration of
challenging sounds, we are held up in air above the calm waters of shining ocean with ‘Into the Arms of
Stillness.’ Sweet and light touch of dance music is delivered in ‘A Story in E5’ introducing a more
melodic approach uncharacteristic of other tracks. Club music in trance freeing your soul, asking you to
join in celebration through a strange blend of contrasting sounds that crash in waterfall. Avery’s search
for light traps you in depths of malfunctioning awareness that gives way to sweet eternity.
