Flug – “Austral Frames EP” (Rekids Special Projects) [June 11, 2021]

Sebastian Lopez, better known as Flug, releases his first outing on Radioslave’s Rekids Special Projects with three tracks that demonstrate his range in techno production.  Previous releases on heavyweight labels such as Uncage, Suara, Sci-Tec & Trip have showcased his direct, almost industrial style.  As befitting Rekids, this time around he focuses on a more 909 approach, Detroit influence, funk and fast tempos.

AR01 begins with a straight-ahead groove, anchored by rolling toms and conga percussion.  Shuffling hats pick up the energy as the groove builds with the rising, looping synths.  They filter and open throughout the track, as new hat patterns provide both changes in energy and shifting textures.

AR01 Jacking Mix is a standout on the EP, the bass tone a bit more acidy and really cutting through with its grittier harmonics.  The hats shuffle harder, and Flug uses deftly placed snare accents to give the beat the more syncopated jackin rhythm, representing the moniker well. A hypnotic synth stab pattern floats eerily throughout this number, filtering, pulsing and evolving.

AR02 comes out strong from the first bar, a round portamento flavored synth takes the forefront, morphing and warbling with filter and envelope tweaks, becoming harder and more aggressive.  Deep subby bass carries the high energy of the track, with clever hat textures alternating to create dynamic changes.

Overall, an excellent, very direct and heater release, communicating Flug’s evolution and ability to flex production chops, perfect for Rekids.
