Minimal techno pioneer Robert Hood is back on Radio Slave’s “Rekids” with a four track EP of his boundlessly creative parables, primed as always to shake dance floors.
“Chroma Wave” begins the sonic narrative, taking you on an ominous tour through a variety of Hood’s signature sounds and grooves. A vintage sounding mid-bass sequence starts off soloed with a mysterious and waving pad, building you up into one of his multiple teeth-rattling kicks used in the track. From there he guides you on a classy runaround of his classic minimal warehouse sound, featuring snappy drum patterns and reverb-soaked detuned modular melodies.
“The Majestic (Deeper Edit)” turns to the bigger atmospheres with a massive rave synth lead you can imagine filling up a festival-sized arena. Although enormous in size, the arrangement drops the filters on the sounds to trance out the audience and fulfill the title name. Staying undeniably himself with his dry, swinging drums and dark chord progressions, Hood sets you up for more virtuosity on the b-side.
After pounding you with an alternate version of “The Majestic” that has more of Hood’s classic minimal-style atmosphere, the Detroit legend ends the record with a tripped-out modular workout. “Ultrasonic Room” sports razor-sharp drums and resonant synth bleep sequences that give off a plethora of rhythms meticulously tuned and mixed into their own pockets. Mechanical and undeniably groovy, Hood finishes off the EP as strongly as he starts, adding another spectacle to his remarkable discography.
“The Blueprint EP” is available on most streaming platforms and bandcamp, as well as in vinyl format.
