Rolling club jams with pure Detroit attitude lace the latest release from Lyric Hood. Heavy hitting, drum machine-forward jams get the party rocking on “Woman-Hood Chapter 1” EP released on M-Plant.
One half of Floorplan, the other being her father and Detroit legend Robert Hood, Lyric has been enthralled with Detroit electronic music since birth. Her solo productions slow things down a bit but keep all the soul of the aforementioned dynamic duo. The release comes fresh off Robert Hood’s record label, M-Plant, featuring minimal techno since 1994. “Woman-Hood Chapter 1“ EP is a straight to the point, in your face expression of feel good club music.
Chock full of old school acapella samples including “Let Me Tell You” by the infallible Loleatta Holloway, this new EP maintains a formulaic house approach for all four tracks, but Lyric adds modern mastering techniques to freshen up and round out the sound.
There’s a certain rawness found within the four-to-the-floor rhythms that make for unadulterated funk. For example, “Let Me Tell U” features precise reverberated bass strikes giving the groove a warm feel. The release sticks to the basics of production in its patterns and creates stimulating tension with drawn out breakdowns. Think Mr. G and how the ‘less is more’ mantra builds efficient, exciting tracks. A more melancholic take can be found on the fourth track “11.44 (AM Version)” showcasing friendly chord echoes and a brazen, metallic drum kit. The closing track on this EP utilizes a catchy swing to set the listener up for a quick climax as the echoed chords are taken down octaves, leaving a tantalizing taste for more.
Lyric holds more than her own in “Woman-Hood Chapter 1” EP with raw cuts exuding house class. From the glockenspiel to the endlessly reiterated house declarations, Lyric Hood shouts out to the pioneers of the past with a classic house feel and at the same time, puts a beautifully fresh twist on the future of club music.
