FØRMA – “Groove In Paris EP001” (Self Release) [April 11, 2023]

A newcomer on the Paris circuit, FØRMA releases their first self-released album, “Groove In Paris EP001” featuring 3 versatile, hard groove Techno takes built for late nights and dark dancefloors alike.

To anyone without their pulse on a musical membrane, France seemingly hits the mark as a tourist destination. Idealizing and romanticizing of the country spans many decades and to most, between the local scenery and historic architecture, the country is portrayed in mainstream culture with an air of elegance. In the media circuit of news and happenings, France has long had a stand in political and social change throughout the years that’s served as a beacon of change influenced directly by the people that reside in the country. Beneath all the major news coverage and societal norms of tourist destinations however, the country houses one of the globe’s most revered underground music cultures.

The culture and scene houses dark warehouse and club events that are almost brutalist in auditory nature, leaning heavily into the high BPMs and distortion-laden elements and sonics that bridge a gap between hardstyle and the more Techno-centric movements. DIY sound system culture and event organization is common, and there is an air of mysticism surrounding the nature and organization of these events. A perfect embodiment of modern rave culture intrinsically built into the fabric of the movements of the country, it comes as little surprise to see the styles commonly showcased on this vibrant nightlife’s stacks of speakers, finding its way into the major platforms while still holding the same enigmatic value that makes their music scene so alluring.

France as a whole has played an intricate role in shaping the European sound selection over the years. Fast paced and prominently aggressive tastes have become the staple of an underground culture that finds itself constantly churning out some of the brightest to strike at the heart of heavy and hard Techno connoisseurs across the globe.

New faces are always populating on the online market for music by any means. However, many seemingly create an online platform leading to finding their sound, and in the miasma of new music, it’s a bit more difficult to find self releases that show an inherent identification of sound on their first album. Sometimes it can be found in the novelty of the current styles and takes on Techno or House, and others are just trying to make a name through individual expression however unique or niche the sound may be. This is not the case of ephemeral Techno presence FØRMA.

Little is present in the online spectrum for this French talent, which in itself lends to the hidden nature of the country’s underground. Despite this however, “Groove In Paris EP001” shows an already prominent understanding of auditory design and interest that’s tangible in this 3-track release spanning from groove-laden bass lines to heavy and crunchy textures.

“After At 37” dives right into industrial tonalities to set the stage for “Dark Street” which captures the innate influence of bass-heavy kicks and droning arpeggiations of synth work. “Groove In Paris” however, is the true gem of the trilogy. Featuring an almost funky vocal line before diving into stripped down, triplet low-end signatures, the track caps the release on a note of high energy and pleasantly built movements reminiscent of the moment that the fervent nature of an event hits its stride.

“Groove In Paris EP001” is a testament to the styles that come out of a vibrant musical influence housing the true heart and soul of values that make Techno what it is. It is forward thinking, while still paying homage to the locale that fostered its growth and nurtures inspiration and individuality.
